Every year I spend over $200 of my own money on my classroom. It is a necessary expense that I plan on at the beginning of every school year. I am so thankful for our PTO for also giving us a stipend, or that amount would probably double. Our local schools are underfunded and we are struggling to have our supply needs met. Asking parents for more supplies with all of the other financial obligations that occur at the beginning of the year isn’t something that I feel comfortable with. Luckily there are organizations that help teachers get creative in the classroom.
Office Depot and Adopt-A-Classroom have partnered to raise awareness about teachers, and all that they do in the lives of their students. By offering small grants to teachers through donations, Adopt-A-Classroom is helping teachers to enhance the learning environment for students in their classrooms. This is a great opportunity for teachers to ask for things that school budgets don’t support, like technology. This is also a great opportunity for the public to be able to donate their money to a local teacher who is doing creative things in their classroom that they agree with and want to support.

Estella Pyfrom uses her Brillant Bus to give students access to technology. She used her life savings to build this bus to help bridge the digital divide. She has recently been featured as one of CNN’s heroes. She is just one of the teachers that Office Depot and Adopt-A-Classroom is helping to achieve her dreams for her students. Estella is like many teachers across this nation who are going out of their way to make a difference in a child’s education.
I have been on the receiving end of local donations and they have made a huge impact in my classroom. My students have been able to have hands on experiences thanks to strangers who believed in my teaching philosophy. If you are able, I hope you can also help make a difference in a child’s education by donating.
I encourage both teachers to check out the Office Depot: Teachers Change Lives campaign and learn more about the program.
