I hate cleaning!  There, I have confessed, it is now out there for the world to know. I do it, but I definitely don’t look forward to it. I never really understood Monica on “Friends”.  She was a clean fanatic (maybe that is why I liked Rachel  better).  I never understood people like my old roommate who would vacuum twice a day, that is until I got my hands on the Oreck Platinum Pilot Vacuum.  Apparently all I needed was a little motivation (and an amazing appliance to help out).

The Oreck Platinum Pilot has changed the way that we clean our house.  We have been needing a vacuum for quite a while.  The one we have was from way back when I lived alone before I even met my husband, and it cost about $50.  It didn’t work so good.  As most of you who are readers of my blog know, we have a very large 120 pound dog and a toddler. This can be a very lethal combination when it comes to keeping dog hair off of the child.  We have hard wood floors and have mostly used a floor-mate  to keep it clean, but keeping the dog hair at bay has been a real challenge.

My husband put the Oreck together with relative ease.  It didn’t take that long and we were off vacuuming away.  My husband did the honors of the first vacuum with the Oreck.  The results were immediate.  After one pass of the living room we were in shock and awe in a great way.  The Oreck Platinum Pilot as a unique ball-joint and pivot connection that allows you maneuver the vacuum around furniture with a light touch.  The Oreck also has a small brush on the edge of the head of the vacuum that doesn’t allow any dirt to escape.  It is extremely light and easy to maneuver around the house.  It is so light that you can actually get it under a bed with ease.  The first time we did that we accidentally sucked up a hair headband  and had to take the vacuum apart to take it out (unbelievably easy to do).  Beware, the vacuum is extremely powerful.  We accidentally got a rope that was attached to one of TJ’s pull toys sucked up by it and it snapped the rope in half.

My family has a lot of allergies.  Even our dog Eli suffers from allergies.  Since receiving the Oreck I know that I have seen a lot less allergic reactions within the family.  In fact, my son’s rashes have gotten remarkably better and we were able to take him to get his pictures done.  I don’t know if that is because of the Oreck, but I do know that my house is cleaner and therefore healthier for my family.

My Thoughts:

Being Eco-friendly is becoming more and more important to my family.  I want to leave this earth healthy for my son and his children.  Since beginning this blog I have been fortunate to learn and review some amazing “green” products that will help reduce my energy footprint on the earth.  An amazing company that I just worked with is Seventh Generation.

One thing I have learned, and now live by, in my life is not to go cheap on the toilet paper!  A good soft durable toilet paper is an essential item in our household.  The last thing I want is a scratchy, rough piece of toilet paper.  Cottonelle is our brand of choice, and now after  conducting “The Great Debate” they have introduced a brand new toilet paper.

My biggest fear as a new mom is being able to tell if my son is sick or not. I prepared myself for motherhood by reading about parenting from the “experts”.  As any mom can tell you, reading about and actually experiencing parenthood are two very different things.  I was so anxious, at the beginning, about every sound BJ made.  Is he hurt?  Is he sick? Is he hungry?  Luckily for mom BJ has been a relatively healthy baby (minus all the skin issues).  The nurse at the hospital taught us how to take BJ’s temperature using two different methods, under the arm and rectally.  I was okay with the underarm method, but I really didn’t want to ever have to take BJ’s temperature rectally.  Well now I don’t have to!  There is a “kinder, gentler and more exact thermometer” available on the market that captures your temperature by running it across the forehead, and I am very excited to post a review on it.

The Exergen TemporalScanner is the world’s first and only infrared thermometer that measures your body temperature by taking a reading from the temporal artery found on your forehead. When you run the Temporal Thermometer across the forehead the thermometer takes 1,000 reading per second, selects the most accurate and displays it digitally. It does this in just two seconds! Can you say it is less invasive than the old rectal way?  There is no more waiting with a digital thermometer under your child’s arm, or in your mouth, waiting for the beep.  I hate sitting still with a thermometer under my tongue waiting to find out if I have a high temperature or not.  This is much easier, and faster!

With a gentle stroke of the forehead it captures the naturally emitted heat from the skin over the temporal artery, taking 1,000 readings per second, selecting the most accurate. Why is it more accurate than measuring ear temperature?

A major reason ear thermometers are considered inaccurate by medical professionals is because the positioning of the probe in the ear canal is inconsistent, thus creating inconsistent readings and frequently missing fevers. The temporal artery thermometer scans the forehead area for the temporal artery and it is almost impossible to miss the artery during a scan. Also, the person whose temperature is being taken does not like something inserted in their ear, making good positioning even more difficult. Our Experience

The TemporalScanner came to our house at a really useful time.  BJ has been suffering from a cold and I think he is getting his top teeth in.  The first couple of times I used the  TemporalScanner was a learning experience.  It takes some practice to figure out how to use it. After practicing on myself, my husband, the dog, and finally BJ I felt very confident in using the product (I actually love using it, I had a lot of fun. The dog didn’t appreciate my excitement, or the scan of his forehead). A little advice, take the cap off of the TemporalScanner before you use it (I know..duh, but I was so excited to try it out). BJ was a little afraid of the TemporalScanner the first time I used it on him.  He got used to it and now he loves it when mommy takes his temperature. I love that this product is environmentally friendly by using infrared technology instead of mercury. Overall, this is one of my favorite products that I have in my house. I absolutely love it and highly recommend it to anyone looking for an accurate thermometer for their family.

I received a TemporalScanner from Exergen to facilitate this review. All opinions are 100% mine.

We are constantly trying to find small ways that we can save energy and be more “green”.  One small way that we can all contribute is by switching out something as simple as a light bulb.  If you are not a fan of the funny looking compact fluorescent light bulbs than I have a great solution for you.  Sylvania has a light bulb that is a halogen bulb (normal traditional looking light bulb) that can replace your current 60w bulbs using only 43w of energy, that is an energy savings of 28%.  Think about how quickly that adds up if you replace all your current light bulbs with the Sylvania SuperSaver Halogen!

I recently replaced two of my lamps light bulbs with the Sylvania Halogens to review the product.  The new light bulbs are a bit smaller but fit right into the old light bulbs spot.  The new bulbs were slightly dimmer (and by slight I mean I had to really stare at the lightbulbs which I don’t recommend doing to your eyes).  However, it was so small of a change that I doubt anyone would notice.  I have tried compact fluorescent light bulbs in the past but I don’t like the look of them in my ceiling fan lights where they are exposed. It looks weird.  I really like that these energy-saving bulbs look just like the regular light bulbs.  I will use these instead in my ceiling fans or wherever light bulb are actually visible in my house.  It is the best of both worlds, I get the look I want and the earth gets the energy savings that it desperately needs!
