My son and I love to snack.  I am sure he learned it from me.  I could eat several small snacks a day and go without the large meals.  My husband, on the other hand, is a health nut and will only snack on healthy things that are good for him. I usually don’t like those things… until now!

I am still in denial that baby girl is going to be here next week!  I am so looking forward to not being pregnant ever again!  Reality is starting to set in, however, because I haven’t been getting much sleep lately.   The lack of sleep for the first few months is something that I am not looking forward to.  I am fortunate to be off from school for the summer, but still I do have a three year old that still needs taking care of in addition to my newborn.  I am going to be sleep deprived!

As we all know, babies are expensive.  The first time around we made sure that the products we bought for our firstborn would work for any additional children we might decide to have to help defray costs.  Our stroller is a grey/blue that works for boys and girls.  Our car seats are black and are gender neutral, and our diaper bag is brown and would work again for either a boy or a girl.  We really have everything we need for this new baby.  That is until I set my eyes on this:

… the little bit of pink/purple sealed the deal.  I wanted this bag.  The problem?  I already have a diaper bag that is in good shape and would work fine.  I decided (after talking to my husband) that this one time I could splurge and buy the bag so I ordered it online and about a month later it came!  I absolutely adore it (if you couldn’t tell). Recently, JJ Cole Collections sent me a set of Muslin Blankets in Primrose to welcome our new baby girl next month.  I remember finding muslin blankets towards the end of TJ’s swaddling days.  Muslin blankets are wonderful because they become softer after every wash and they are lightweight and breathable.  I was a little skeptical at first, but its true!  I couldn’t believe how soft the blankets get after being repeatedly washed.  These JJ Cole muslin blankets are fantastic because they are very large.  At 48 in x 48 in, you can still swaddle larger babies and older babies.  I know we tried to swaddle TJ until he was about a year old.  He loved it, but finding swaddle blankets that large is very difficult.  I love these blankets because you can use them for more than just swaddling.  They can be a receiving blanket, a blanket you can throw on the floor for baby to lay on, or a blanket to cover your infant seat when baby is sleeping.  Check out how large these are:

One of my biggest struggles with TJ is his eating habits.  I thought I would be the mom who got her child to eat sushi and hummus.  Vegetables were going to be a part of his vocabulary from day one.  It was going to be fantastic!  Well what a fantasy that was.  We have struggled with the eating thing since he moved to table food.  It seems like my perfect little boy was no longer perfect and it has been a tough road ever since.

I have needed all the help I can get when it comes to food.  I recently was sent a copy of the book Food Fights: Winning the Nutritional Challenges of Parenthood Armed With Insight, Humor and a Bottle of Ketchup (American Academy of Pediatrics, March 2012) by Laura A. Jana, MD, FAAP and Jennifer Shu, MD, FAAP. This book is filled with great information and suggestions for picky eaters.  Here is a short excerpt from the book:

Whining and Dining

According to the dictionary, whining is defined as complaining

through the use of a high-pitched or distressed cry. By our definition,

whining is an incredibly annoying yet seemingly unavoidable part

of childhood that at the end of a long day can have the same effect as

fingernails on a chalkboard. As it relates to dining, children are quick

to learn that whining can be an extremely effective way to get what they

want to eat and/or drink everywhere from the crib to the kitchen table

to the grocery store. It’s not hard to see how a child’s persistent whining

about food can cause a parent’s nutritional decision-making abilities to

become temporarily impaired. After all, it is a whole lot easier to yield

to whining for food rather than something you just can’t give in to—

Whining Away

When you find yourself faced with a child who whines about food, the

best thing you can do is come to the table prepared.

• Expect the Expected. Simply being aware that whining about food

(and just about everything else) is inevitable will hopefully allow you

to prepare yourself and keep it from grating on your nerves quite as

much as it otherwise might.

Whining and Dining

• Keep Your Cool. Whining is an intuitive way for your child to get

what she wants. It’s also her way of luring you into battle. We highly

recommend that you refuse to take part. If it’s food she wants, then

resist the urge to give it to her when the whining intensifies and you

find you can’t take it anymore. If whining is met with reward—or

even if you hold out but it becomes clear that it drives you nuts—

you can expect the agony to be prolonged.

• Let Whining Fall on Deaf Ears. Once your child is old enough to

really get into the swing of whining—usually around 3 or so—start

reinforcing the fact that her whining is going to fall on deaf ears.

If she is sitting at the table whining about what she does or doesn’t

want to eat for dinner, tell her as calmly as you possibly can that you

can’t understand her when she talks like that and ask her if she has

something to tell or ask you. If she continues to whine, go about your

business. If, on the other hand, she makes an attempt to rephrase

her “request,” be sure to acknowledge her efforts. Remember that

stopping mid-whine is a tough task at any age, so don’t expect her

to drop the whine entirely. It’s not settling for less to respond to a

toned-down snivel.

Mealtime Milestones:

What’s in a Whine?

• 9 Months. Starting as early as 9 months, kids learn to point with a purpose

as they figure out the benefits of pointing out what they want, including

food.

• 12 Months. Children typically utter their first words, and “no” is often one

of the stand-alone favorites.

• 2 Years. By this age, you can expect your child to put 2 words together—

as in “no way” or “want that.”

• 2–3 Years. Kids begin to make better use of basic manners such as

“Please” and “Thank you.” This, in turn, allows for the development of the

characteristic “puhleeeeeeeze” so commonly employed in the context of

whining and dining.

3 Years. At this age, kids can typically string together 3 or more words in a

single sentence, and 75% of what they say is supposed to be understandable

to parents and other caregivers. This means that the “I want one!” or

“I don’t like it!” is likely to come through loud and clear for all to hear.

• 4 Years. Even innocent bystanders should be able to understand most of a

4-year-old’s speech, whining or not. A more sophisticated form of whining

may ensue, including the classics: “How come she gets to have one and

I don’t?” “You never give me anything good!” and “Please, just this once

can’t I….”

I am still reading my way through the book, but I have learned quite a bit about what things to try and not to try.  While I don’t expect TJ to miraculously start eating everything I put in front of him, I do appreciate the little hints that the book gives me.  I also appreciate the humor, because lets face it, we can all use a little more humor!

Being a blogger, one might think that I am all up to date with the latest technology.  Well, while it is partially true, the area that I have not been tech savvy in has been with smartphones.  I still have my old, trusty cell phone that makes and receives calls.  It has a camera (not a very good one) and will text, but I am extremely slow with it.  While even my dad and mom have moved into using a blackberry and a smartphone, I am still in ancient land.  So when Nokia asked if I would like to try out the all new Nokia Lumia Windows phone, I thought “Heck, why not!”

The first thing I noticed right out of the box was its sleek design.  I love the white color of this phone.  It also comes in black that my husband really likes.  All I had to do was put in my T-Mobile SIM card and all of my information transferred over.  I immediately started playing around with the settings and set the coloring to pink!  I love the pink and white combination.  For even more customization you can add a color cover.

It took me just a couple of minutes to get my Gmail account set up with the phone.  The Nokia Drive app was already installed so I got to play around with that as well.

My Thoughts

It has been an easy transition into the smartphone market.  Since I use a lot of social media, I have enjoyed having a lot of my online tools right in the palm of my hand.  I have only used Mac products in the past, so getting to know Windows all over again was a little bit of a struggle, I just say that because I have an i-pad and an i-pod touch that I have been using for travel and on the go and I am very familiar with how they operate. I have used both facebook and Twitter successfully from this phone to stay in touch with my blogging buddies.

My old cell phone only had to be charged about once a week.  If this phone has a weakness for me it would be its battery life.  I found that I had to charge it at least once a day.  I hear that its pretty normal for a smartphone to have to charge that much, but I am not used to that and found it to be a burden.  I have had a lot of mommy brain lately and I have found that the phone has shut off a lot because I didn’t charge the battery.

Downloading apps from the app store is really simple.  I found that the selection of apps is great with a little of everything for everyone in the family.  The camera on this phone is a 5 megapixel and is much better than the one I have currently.  Surfing the web is as simple as putting in the web address.  I love seeing my blog in miniature form!

Overall, I would absolutely recommend this phone to anyone looking for a smartphone that is easy to use and affordable.  I think this new Windows phone from Nokia is a great alternative to higher priced phones that do the exact same thing.

Do you have a picky eater in your family?  Well, let me tell you about mine.  He is almost three years old and cute as a button.  He sleeps great and is usually pretty well behaved.  Our troubles are all with food.  He doesn’t want tot try anything new, and getting him to eat anything healthy is like pulling teeth.  It is a big source of frustration!
What is a mom to do? Well, I was challenged by Hellmann’s to change up our chicken routine and create a recipe that the whole family will love.  I decided to try the Succulent Chicken Parmesan recipe off of Hellmann’s website.

SUCCULENT CHICKEN PARMESAN

The juiciest & simplest chicken Parmesan recipe around

4 servings

Prep Time: 10 minutes     Cook Time: 23 minutes

• 1/4 cup Italian seasoned dry bread crumbs
• 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
• 4 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves (about 1-1/4 lbs.)
• 1/4 cup Hellmann’s® or Best Foods® Real Mayonnaise
• 1/2 cup Ragu® Old World Style® Pasta Sauce
• 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (about 2 oz.)

1. Preheat oven to 425°.
2. Combine bread crumbs with Parmesan cheese in shallow dish; set aside.
3. Add chicken and Hellmann’s® or Best Foods® Real Mayonnaise to large plastic bag; shake to evenly coat. Remove chicken, then lightly coat in crumb mixture. Arrange chicken on baking sheet.
4. Bake 20 minutes. Evenly top chicken with Pasta Sauce, then mozzarella cheese. Bake an additional 3 minutes or until chicken is thoroughly cooked and cheese is melted.

Hellmann’s has a lot of options for tasty chicken that the whole family will enjoy, even those picky eaters like my TJ. This recipe was a nice change from our normal baked chicken routine.  My husband and I really enjoyed it.  It was also so simple to make and didn’t take much time at all.  I love that it was so easy and economical to make on a weekday after a long day at work.  You can pair it with vegetables or pasta like we did.

I had to save my favorite baby item for last!  What a wonderful couple of months we had here at A Mom’s Impression.  I loved bringing all of these wonderful baby items to you with amazing giveaways as well.  All of these products are going to make welcoming baby girl in May so much easier.  I do have a couple of more products that I will share this month, but for my grand finale, I am bringing you the baby item I could not possibly live without!

When TJ was born, I didn’t really know what to expect.  I was a first time mom, and really in our family he was the first newborn.  I didn’t know what products I would use, so I did a little research.  This is how I decided to blog about product reviews.  I knew from my research that I needed to get a breastfeeding pillow, and the Boppy received the most accolades so I decided to put that one on our registry.

My son has loved reading the Lorax over the past few weeks. We received the book in the mail along with some Seventh Generation Free & Clear Diapers to test out. Ever since the book came he has wanted us to read it to him as a “Night Night” story.
