I love taking pictures. I might not be the best photographer, but there is almost always a camera within my reach. I read on another blog about a digital camera for kids and thought what a great idea that is. What kid doesn’t want to do what their mom and dad do? I know that more than once, I have had my students come up to me and want to take pictures with my camera. Well, I really don’t want a five year old to take my expensive camera and try to take photos with it. Lucky for me, I recently had the opportunity to review the Dora The Explorer Talking Digital Camera.
My son is too young to enjoy this camera (he is after all 17 months and doesn’t show signs of being a photography prodigy…. yet) so I enlisted the help of my niece to test out the camera. My niece is 4, almost 5, years old and is the perfect age for the Dora camera. She was very excited to be my little tester. She didn’t have any problems taking all the photos allowed in about 3 minutes. Here are some of her pictures taken with the Dora camera:

As you can see the quality is not great, but the camera retails for about $25 so I didn’t expect it to be as good as my real expensive camera. My niece was so excited to see her pictures on my laptop. She was so proud of herself. I love seeing pride and confidence building in my niece and just seeing that was well worth the $25.
We found the Dora digital camera to be really easy to use and a lot of fun! My niece was a photographer for the day and took a lot of pictures of us during lunch (as you can see the majority of them were taken of my husband). I would say out of the 22 pictures she took in the first try about 6 of them turned out. She has since learned a little bit more about how the camera works and her second batch was much clearer.
I must be objective and let you know that there is a few things I would like to see changed in the next model of this camera. The battery cover was a pain in the butt to unscrew and put the batteries in. I think that the world’s smallest screw was holding that together. I had a hard time finding a screwdriver small enough to unscrew it. After I finally got the back of the camera off, I almost lost that tiny screw.
I also accidentally uploaded my entire image library into the Dora software. I would like to see that part of the software a little more user friendly.
Here are some details about the Dora The Explorer Talking Digital Camera:
- says 3 different phrases as pictures are taken
- Software CD included – works with PC and Mac (creates fun picture and you can even play games)
- Includes Cable Connector, Wrist Strap and Manual
- needs 2 “AAA” batteries (not included)
Overall the Dora The Explorer Talking Digital Camera is a wonderful gift for any young child. It retails for just under $25 and would be a perfect stocking stuffer for Christmas this year!
