When I first began teaching kindergarten a few years ago I would come home after the first week of school with sore inner thighs. I couldn’t figure it out for a while until one day I crouched down to tie one of my students’ shoes and realized that I was getting a workout from crouching up and down so often to tie shoes (I must have really been out of shape). I had just begun my quest to have all students in my class able to tie their own shoes. What an undertaking. I have since given up and continued to improve my flexibility by tying about 30 pairs of shoes a day.
Another mother, Wendy, wanted to find a better way of teacher her two young children how to tie their shoes and Tie Buddies was born. Tie Buddies are kid-friendly devices that you attach to your child’s shoelaces that act as easy pull-tabs, allowing kids to tie their shoes without the messy loops. In 8 easy steps (parents complete step 1) you can teach your child to tie shoes faster than the conventional method. The Tie Buddies also have characters printed on them in order for you to create stories to help your child remember the easy steps. For instance, we received the Fairy and Magic Wand Tie Buddies for review. My niece is 4 years old and loves princesses. Using Tie Buddies easy steps you could say the following story :
“HELP THE FAIRY CAST HER SPELL! Begin the magic with your best starting knot. Then pass the Fairy’s wand around, over and under her. YOU DID IT.” (Taken from the back of the Tie Buddies package, I wasn’t creative enough to come up with that on my own.)
Tying your shoes takes a lot of practice, even with using Tie Buddies. Tie Buddies does help kids as young as 3 learn how to tie shoes faster. Use your imagination and you can make learning to tie with Tie Buddies a rewarding experience with your child, you will be doing your child’s kindergarten teacher a favor. As for me, I will just have to get my butt to the gym to work those inner thighs.
